Dr Leona Yip


Dr Leona Yip is a Melbourne-trained dermatologist currently in private practice in Canberra after relocating here in late 2014. Dr Yip is a Fellow of The Australasian College of Dermatologists (FACD), a qualification obtained after four years of intensive dermatology specialty training that concludes with fellowship examinations to ensure the highest competence in the recognition and management of all aspects of disorders of the skin, hair and nails.

After obtaining her FACD, Dr Yip also completed subspecialty training in the management of hair and scalp disorders (alopecias) in England with various experts, and in Melbourne with Professor Rod Sinclair as her mentor. This subspecialty interest complements her PhD work on the genetics of female pattern hair loss, which has received national and international recognition for her novel discovery of genes that predispose women to this condition. Her PhD thesis was nominated for the Chancellor's Prize for "Excellence in PhD thesis". Dr Yip's work has been presented in national and international meetings, and has won numerous research grants and three awards in recognition for her contribution to dermatology research. 

Dr Yip remains committed to dermatology research and academia alongside her busy private practice. She is an Honorary Visiting Dermatologist at St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne, where she spent most of her time during her PhD research and in dermatology training. Dr Yip remains heavily involved with the supervision and training of dermatology registrars, and also with the education of general practitioners and medical students through invited lectures and clinical attachments. Dr Yip is an appointed advocate for The Australasian College of Dermatologists to help engage and educate the community and media to raise literacy in dermatology health through strategic initiatives.

Dr Yip has published numerous publications and commissioned articles either as first or senior author in peer-reviewed medical journals and medical websites. She is an Editorial Consultant for The British Journal of Dermatology, and is also a reviewer for peer-reviewed medical journals such as The Australasian Journal of Dermatology and The British Journal of Dermatology. She was a member of the Dermatology Expert Group involved with the formulation of the Dermatology Therapeutic Guidelines version 4 published in 2015 in Australia. Dr Yip has also sat on international advisory boards for hair research meetings where the forefront of hair biology and alopecia treatments are presented.

Dr Yip enjoys public speaking and is a regularly invited speaker at national and international meetings. She also regularly features on radio and in printed and online media as a skin and hair expert. Dr Yip has experience with bespoke and corporate consulting, and continues to offer this service upon request. Dr Yip is currently Consultant Dermatologist for Curash Australia and Nivea Sun Australia.

In private practice, Dr Yip is experienced in all aspects of general, surgical and laser dermatology for children and adults. Dr Yip also regularly provides private specialist care to the large international diplomatic and embassy community in Canberra.
